| Sudbury design defies convention Inco’s slag dump development in Sudbury, awarded to Acres in December 2002, was based on an innovative design involving construction of two orthogonal faces cut in bedrock to form an 80-foot deep, 280-foot wide excavation. Among the key challenges with this prototype project were ground control measures that would withstand the thermal fluctuations between Sudbury’s winter air and the frothy 1200ºC molten slag. |
