Oil flows at the rate of 275,000 barrels a day from the established Hibernia and Terra Nova fields in Atlantic Canada. Currently three purpose-built tankers, each with 860,000-barrel capacity, shuttle between the offshore sites and the Newfoundland Oil Transshipment facility at Whiffen Head, near Arnold's Cove, on the eastern shore of Placentia Bay. From there the oil is shipped by smaller tankers to refineries on the eastern seaboard. Design and construction of this new facility began in 1996, and the SGE Group, now SGE Acres, has made major contributions ever since. For Phase 1 SGE supplied professional and technical services associated with design and contract administration. At this stage only Hibernia was producing, and the facility consisted of three 500,000-barrel storage and a loading platform. Anticipating increased product flow from the Terra Nova development, two more storage tanks and an additional loading platform were added in 1999. SGE acted as lead consultant for design management and detailed design. Acres International was responsible for mechanical design, under SGE direction. Most recently, with the White Rose field about to come on stream, SGE once again took responsibility for the addition of a sixth storage tank and support systems, bringing the total capacity to 3 million barrels. Total value of the development, to date, exceeds $200 million. The development of the Transshipment terminal has brought new efficiency to the harvesting of oil from distant deepwater fields.
