Acres International - Innovations (Winter 2003)
  Local understanding, international expertise

"We will be poised to support the development of the massive Voisey's Bay nickel and cobalt deposit in Labrador, and the new nickel processing facility on the Island," said Allan Green, President of SGE Acres, late last year. The occasion was a press conference to announce a working partnership between his firm and Hatch, the Toronto-based specialists in mining and metals engineering.

The new entity, SGE Hatch Ltd., is headquartered in the Bally Rou Building in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Speaking for Hatch, President and CEO Ron Nolan said, "Clients will benefit from the presence of a local firm with a long proven record of service in the region, drawing on the specialized experience in mining and mineral processing of an international firm."

The partnership has already taken on two significant projects. In Labrador contracts have been awarded for surveying work and materials testing. These projects are being undertaken in partnership with Torngait Services Inc., an Inuit majority-owned company.

In Argentia, SGE Hatch is the prime consultant for pre-engineered office/warehouse facilities for the Voisey's Bay Nickel Company Ltd. and for remodeling of VBNC's project office. A number of studies are also being conducted for water systems, an infrastructure corridor, electrical distribution systems and a topographical survey.
