Winning in an open electricity market
33rd H.G. Acres SeminarBack in 1970, Acres held the first of what became a highly-respected series of seminars, named for the company's founder, Dr. Harry G. Acres. For many years, it was known as the H.G. Acres Geotechnical Seminar, addressing themes such as Earthquake Engineering, Permafrost, and Bedrock Engineering. In recent years, the scope of the seminars has broadened to focus on major issues in power generation. The seminars attract widespread attention. Over the last seven years more than 150 different companies have participated; average attendance is around 100. Key speakers are leaders in their specialty; supporting speakers, drawn from academia, government, industry and Acres own staff, are uniquely qualified to contribute to discussion and understanding of the year's theme. In Niagara Falls for the first time, the event will be devoted entirely to Power Transmission and Distribution, focusing on issues of deregulation. The overall theme is "Enhancing Competitiveness in an Open Market". Significantly, just five days later, on May 1st, the Ontario electricity market will be opened. The seminar program is still being finalized, but sessions will be held on "Market Changes", "Industry Reform", "Asset Productivity", and "Planning and Operations Issues". The concluding panel session will address "The New World of Competition". Participation in the seminar is by invitation.
