H.G. Acres Seminar 2003: Water Power Solutions in a Changing Market

The 34th annual Acres Seminar took place on April 25th in Niagara Falls. Invited guests from many North American locations and a distinguished guest from Ghana joined Acres staff at the day-long work session, which was followed by an evening banquet overlooking the Falls. The next morning many delegates enjoyed a tour of the Sir Adam Beck I and II generating stations.

Originally a geotechnical seminar, the focus of the event has broadened in recent years to cover a wide range of topical subjects - among them earthquake engineering, waste management, and green power.

Today, hydropower can go a long way towards satisfying the need for renewable sources of energy. Although it is a mature industry, there is still abundant scope for enhanced efficiency and some additional development.

The keynote speaker for the day was Steve Gilchrist, MPP, Commissioner for Alternative Energy and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Energy, Ontario. He spoke of the energy future within the Province, and of present and future incentives to pursue new development projects. His talk set the stage for a number of presentations from industry, government agencies and Acres staff specialists.
