Work has begun on a new assignment for Avista Corporation on the conceptual and detailed design phases of
the Cabinet Gorge Bypass Tunnel Project. The design development phase will be carried out this year and design execution will begin in 2006. Our team will determine if two plugged and abandoned diversion tunnels can be returned to service, in order to improve water quality during flood conditions, so that Avista's hydroelectric project on the Clark Fork River in Idaho can satisfy its new FERC license. The bypass tunnel will be designed to avoid air-water mixing to prevent dissolved gas in the discharge flow which may be harmful to fish. At least two large submerged gates, each approximately 32 feet wide, will be installed in the tunnels. The work will also involve extensive use of computational fluid dynamic models to confirm physical models. Hatch Mott MacDonald will advise on tunnels and access shaft design and constructability.
SGE Acres has been retained by the Department of Transportation and Works of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to provide detailed design, tendering and construction management services for a new 44-bed, long-term care facility in Clarenville. This assignment includes architectural, civil, structural, mechanical and electrical design of the entire facility and development of the site. Site development work is scheduled for completion in 2005, followed by design of the long-term care facility in 2006. The work also includes an extension and renovations to the existing hospital, to which the new facility will be connected with an overhead link.
Hatch Acres has been awarded a contract for the investigation and analysis of Chickamauga Lock in Chattanooga, Tennessee for the US Army Corps of Engineers. The work involves evaluation of historical data and finite element analysis of the lock including the effects of alkali-aggregate reaction from construction to present. The finite element model will also be used to evaluate the effects of continued AAR on the lock in its future decommissioned state.
This year's conference will be at the Westin Hotel in Calgary, Alberta from October 1 through 6 – visit us at Booth #2. Hatch Acres staff will present papers on a number of subjects and there will be nine technical sessions including: Performance of Existing Dams, Hydrology/Seismic, Dam Safety, Case Histories, Hydro Power Projects, Instrumentation and Monitoring, Environmental Issues, Dam Design and CDA Guidelines.
