Intrigued by energy & resources

If you’re wondering what makes Irvin Kutney tick, it’s really very simple. He’s fascinated with the way people and nature mix.

Irvin Kutney

Irvin has no shortage of energy. He’s a steadfast family man who gets incredible satisfaction from exploring and experiencing nature and athletic/leisure pursuits with his wife and two children.

Let’s just say you’re more likely to find them out playing lacrosse, soccer or hockey, swimming, golfing, skating, skiing, fishing, camping, cycling, hiking, boating or snorkelling than lying on the couch in front of a video game or reality TV. Although they did spend some time there rooting for the Calgary Flames, but even that was short-lived (the team was knocked out of the NHL playoffs in round one).

Professionally, Irvin has more than 25 years experience including EPC/EPCM/study project management of oil sands projects, and civil engineering for mining, industrial, pipeline and residential projects. He also has extensive business development and marketing management experience with specialist skills and training in project management, business development and engineering.

He is a P.Eng with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering (1985) and an MBA (1992) from the University of Saskatchewan.

Irvin spent about five years in engineering management and design in the mining industry on gold and copper projects. He also spent three years in sales and marketing in the mining industry, so he’s very well versed in the key business issues for stakeholders in resource-based engineering and energy sectors.

He’s been working in oil sands since 1999 and was Area Manager of Infrastructure and Utilities for the Muskeg River Oil Sands Mine and Extraction Plant, taking the project from the later stages of the feasibility study through detailed design. He also spent 14 months on site through construction and pre-commissioning for this EPC project with $250 million in his scope of responsibility.

He spent 15 months on the home office design of the CNRL Horizon project as Area Manager for the underground piping, construction services, electrical distribution and communications systems. His responsibilities covered about $150 million. He is currently in the final stages of the Design Basis Memorandum (DBM) of an in-situ SAGD development for Petro-Canada’s MacKay River Expansion.

Irvin particularly enjoys working in team environments. The oil and gas sector is an unusually close-knit community, and the shortage of qualified personnel has made the relationships there even more important for successful completion of project work.

He says that it’s especially rewarding when he meets up with past associates or colleagues to reminisce about their successes and struggles. He figures it’s climbing the mountains that make the valleys so rewarding.
