Dam re-planted on solid ground
After nearly a decade of continuous instrumentation monitoring and dam safety assessments, Hatch Energy concluded in 2003 that the Shikwamkwa Dam (constructed in 1958) was approaching the end of its service life due to foundation uncertainties. On the basis of this assessment, the owner (Brookfield Power) initiated an Accelerated Response Plan, beginning with comprehensive site investigations and engineering designs that culminated in the fast-track construction of a new 35-m-high replacement embankment dam.
