Award of Excellence for Shikwamkwa Replacement Dam
Hatch Energy received the Award of Excellence in the large firm category at the 2007 annual meeting of Consulting Engineers of Ontario. We designed and, with the project team, constructed the new dam in northern Ontario on a fast-track schedule to replace an ageing dam in distress. The replacement dam was built on a complex, pervious, overburden foundation, sealed using a 65-m-deep plastic concrete cutoff wall – the world’s deepest using end-form techniques and the deepest of its kind in Canada. It is also the largest Ontario dam built in 20 years.
Two Top Awards in Manitoba
Acres Manitoba received the Award of Excellence in the Environmental category as well as the Keystone Award for its work on the “Wuskwatim, Keeyask, and Conawapa Sedimentation and Erosion Physical Environment Monitoring Programs.” The Keystone Award is presented to the project entry that represents the best in innovation, added value, advancement of technology, technical excellence, degree of difficulty, management of risk, and benefit to society.
Award of Excellence for Seymour Falls Seismic Upgrade
Hatch Energy was co-recipient of the Award of Excellence in the Municipal Engineering category from the Consulting Engineers of British Columbia. Our work for the Greater Vancouver Water District involved upgrade design for the concrete dam, including post-tensioned anchors and an extension to the existing concrete gravity dam wall. Dam upgrade requirements were determined using complex 3D finite element models and employing state-of-the-art dynamic analysis techniques, which significantly reduced the stabilization and upgrade requirements, compared with conventional techniques. The new gravity wall used EcoSmart™ concrete which reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

New oilsands and thermal projects announced
Hatch Energy has been awarded the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) services contract for the Fort Hills ore preparation plant silo in one of the largest remaining undeveloped oil sands leases in the Athabasca Region of Alberta, Canada. Our team has significant experience in bulk-materials handling and will undertake all phases of the ore-preparation plant silo, which is scheduled for completion in 2011.
The Hatch–Sargent & Lundy joint venture has been retained by ENMAX Corp. to conduct siting and prefeasibility studies for its new 1,200-MW power plant in Calgary, Alberta. The plant will be a combined-cycle generating facility that could burn natural gas or gas from coal. The plant may also produce excess steam or heat for secondary and commercial purposes. We will focus on site locations for the different generation technologies based on coal and natural gas. The first phase of the plant is scheduled for start-up in 2010.
