President's Message: The Tradition Continues
The annual H.G. Acres Seminar in Niagara Falls is named after our founder Harry Acres and is now in its 38th year. This year’s topic was on Tunneling and Underground Excavations.
Digging for Electricity
The Niagara Tunnel is a water diversion project being constructed for Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to augment power generation at its Sir Adam Beck Generating Complex in Niagara Falls, Canada. The first phase of the potentially larger Niagara River Hydroelectric Development consists of a 10.4-km diversion tunnel and associated intake and outlet structures. The tunnel has an excavated diameter of 14.4 m and a nominal finished internal diameter of 12.8 m. The tunnel is being excavated by a tunnel boring machine (TBM) that is currently the largest hard rock TBM in the world.
Reducing Energy Costs in Alaska
The results of Hatch Energy's Alaska-British Columbia Intertie Feasibility Study for Southeast Alaska will facilitate development of the region’s internal and export transmission network. This could in turn lead to lower electricity costs, new hydroelectric developments and broader economic and employment benefits.
Guest Article: The Hydrogen Solution
Scientists around the world are searching for more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives to the world's depleting fossil fuel resources. Dr. Kamiel S. Gabriel discusses the emerging potential of hydrogen currently being investigated by the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and its associates.
