A man in motion
Whether he's flying around the globe for work, drumming with his pipe band, sailing on Lake Ontario, or rallying international whisky connoisseurs, Greg Snyder is only at rest when he’s on the move.
A Senior Project Engineer with more than 25 years experience primarily in hydro power, water resources and dam safety, Greg set up our Fredericton office in 1995 and has managed it ever since.
Greg earned his B.Eng. (Civil) from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1980, but was familiar with hydro long before becoming an engineer. As a student, he worked as a surveyor for the 600-MW Mica Creek development in British Columbia, and his father was Vice President of the Churchill Falls Labrador Corporation. Perhaps engineering is in the blood; Greg's son Alexander, who is studying geomatics and geodesy at the University of New Brunswick, will mark the third generation of Snyders to become an engineer.
Greg worked in offshore oil for many years before joining our team. His skill in this field took him to Norway where he worked on the Oseberg and Gulfaks projects and to France where he contributed to the design of the Hibernia project. On Hibernia, he was involved with wave tank model testing of the gravity base structure in Holland and France. When the project moved to construction in Newfoundland, Greg became Weight Control Manager, responsible for floating the structure during dry dock flooding and transfer to the deepwater site.
Greg's family accompanied him on many of his international assignments where they took advantage of the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture, picking up languages, exploring museums and historical sights, and meeting interesting people from around the world.
Greg’s hydro resume is impressive. He is currently our senior consultant in dam engineering and related business development and his responsibilities include managing engineering and construction projects in dam safety and water resources, dam safety inspections, comprehensive reviews, environmental permitting, ownership transfers, as well as design and construction of remedial works on hydroelectric, water supply and tailings dams.
Greg is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of New Brunswick, has served both on the Council and on various committees and was on the Branch Executive from 1995 to 2006. He is also active in the Canadian Dam Association, currently on the Technical Committee for the 2007 conference in St. John’s.
Greg's expertise benefits many hydro developments in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. He was Project Manager for on-going work on Musquash Watershed Structures where he performed a comprehensive inspection and review and made recommendations for required upgrades and refurbishment. For the last five years, he’s been involved in the implementing those recommendations and repairs. He was responsible for final design, preparation of tender documents, and management during construction to increase the Harmony Dam’s spillway capacity and bring the Harmony Hydro System dams into conformance with the CDA guidelines. He worked on the Fraser Dam Modernization, assisting in the purchase and then supervising design and construction management for the changes to the 1917-vintage powerhouse so that it could be connected to the Edmundston Energy grid.
His portfolio also includes the Dickie Brook dam safety review and penstock study, Loch Lomond Watershed dam safety evaluation, control structures for Minas Basin Pulp and Power, Kearney Lake and Quarry Lake dam repairs, and dam safety work for Deer Lake Power’s Main Dam on Grand Lake.
Greg and his family have lived in Fredericton, where Greg is an enthusiastic member of the New Brunswick Scotch Whisky Tasting Society, a drummer with the Southern Victoria Pipe Band, and an avid kite flyer, for more than 12 years. Whenever they can find time, the family escapes to Kingston, Ontario or to a cottage in the Laurentians for sailing and canoeing adventures – though Greg will often moor the boat to check out an interesting dam. Even in his leisure time, Greg is an engineer in motion.
