All-star player

Rob McLure is one of those guys who truly pours his heart into everything he does. You can see it on his face when he’s at a job site, at the local hockey rink or, on one particularly memorable day last March, at the Hockey Hall of Fame.

He started playing organized hockey when he was four, refereeing when he was 11 and coaching when he was 23. And for the past 20 years, he’s devoted around 30 hours a week to the minor hockey league in hometown Riverview, New Brunswick. Besides his strong skills and knowledge of the game, he’s also injected the hockey club with a solid strategic direction –  “Creating a positive environment for youth development” – and all the ideals that go with it. Player enrolment has increased 10 percent a year since he introduced the Skills Development Task Force for players, coaches and referees in 2002. And the waiting list of league volunteers continues to grow.

This past March, Rob was among 13 people chosen from more than 3,000 nominations for the national RBC Local Hockey Leader award. RBC will donate $10,000 to local minor hockey in his name, and he’s now recognized in a display at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

Rob got his B.Sc. in Civil Engineering in 1986 and his M.Eng. in 1991, both at the University of New Brunswick. He’s a Senior Civil Engineer and Project Manager with 20 years experience in the development of transportation-related infrastructure (airports, highway, urban roadway, rail, marine) as well as community and industrial developments (water, wastewater, surface water, roads and parking facilities).

He’s been responsible for everything from initial planning (feasibility, capacity assessment, modeling), through design development, detailed design, project administration and construction supervision and quality management. In addition to his analysis, planning, design and development expertise, Rob provides specialist services relating to asset investment plans which have included facility condition audits and infrastructure studies related to building, pavement, and underground assets.

Some of his major project accomplishments include more than 50 master plans related to urban infrastructure development and regional transportation investment and 40 major capital projects (including Fredericton-Moncton Highway, Greater Moncton International Airport Redevelopment, Halifax International Airport Airfield Rehabilitation, Town of Riverview East-West Arterial, Magnetic Hill Tourist Park, Vaughan Harvey Blvd., and the Coverdale Roadway rehabilitation).

He’s recognized as a leading computer application engineer for systems modeling, and has established long-term client partnerships, many of which have remained in place for 10 and 20 years.

When interviewed recently about his RBC award, Rob was asked why he does what he does. He said “I just like to see the kids smile and have fun”.

So, as you can see, he has a long history and an obvious passion for building things from the ground up – and always seeing them through. It’s really no surprise, then, what he’s accomplished with the Riverview Minor Hockey Club and its 500+ members. Not to mention what he’s accomplished for our clients.
