Safety – a high priority at Hatch Acres

Safety has always been important to our people – we’re proud of our excellent safety statistics, strict compliance with legislation, and the trustful relationships that result with our clients.

Two of our offices recently received recognition from their provincial safety authorities for their safety achievements. The Halifax office received its annual safety certification with a score of 96 percent from an independent safety auditor. The Calgary office was among the less than one percent of Alberta employers to receive the prestigious Work Safe Alberta 2004 Best Safety Performer Award.

Notwithstanding these achievements, we realize that we must always do more to achieve even better safety outcomes. Clients expect us to bring a proactive approach to safety – both in the completed project, and in the way we do our work. So we equip our people to work closely and safely with theirs, and to provide safety leadership wherever possible in project design and construction.

Taking advantage of the extensive safety resources available to us through our parent company Hatch, we have developed a company-wide safety program within Hatch Acres that includes:
  • A Safety Leadership Team, comprised of senior staff from across various disciplines, provides overall leadership and progress monitoring. I personally chair the SLT, to emphasize the importance of management’s support for our safety programs.
  • Active participation in a health and safety initiative sponsored by Duncan Hawthorne, President and CEO of Bruce Power. This ‘CEO Health & Safety Leadership Charter’ brings together CEO’s and senior management from a wide range of Canadian companies to develop new ways of improving safety performance.
  • Training programs to familiarize all Hatch Acres staff with important safety issues and processes, and to develop new ways of incorporating safety into our project designs.
  • Detailed reporting to senior management of safety statistics and active follow-up on reportable incidents and ‘near misses’ in order to find practical, effective ways to improve safe work practices.
  • Safety audits on our construction projects, using a combination of Hatch Acres and Hatch safety specialists, and safety audit protocols developed by Hatch.

We are focused on helping our employees achieve even greater safety performance both on and off the job, and working with our clients to bring improved safety to their projects. Our organizational commitment is ‘Working Together Safely’ with the objective of doing ‘No Harm’ to people, plants or equipment, the environment or communities where we manage projects.

By maintaining a leadership position in this regard, we aim to give safety new meaning for everyone involved.

Tony Hylton
President, Hatch Acres
