Water Management Planning for Hydropower

Brookfield Power has developed and operated hydroelectric power facilities for more than 100 years. Its portfolio comprises almost 3,900 MW of capacity and includes over 150 hydroelectric power generating stations located on 60 river systems, principally in northeastern North America and Brazil.

Hatch Energy has carried out a number of planning assignments for Brookfield:

  • Review of drafts of a water management plan prepared by the Ministry of Natural Resources for the Serpent River near Blind River, Ontario. The reviews included recommendations for improvements to the plan.
  • Preparation of a water management plan for the Mississagi River near Thessalon/Iron Bridge. The Hatch Energy team worked closely with the client and MNR, with input from the public and First Nations, in developing the water management plan. Baseline and effectiveness monitoring programs were an important component of the water management plan.
  • Preparation of a water management plan for the Montreal River in Northern Ontario near Sault Ste. Marie. Efforts to improve conditions for the aquatic ecology were a primary focus of MNR, while maintaining water power, flood management and recreational opportunities on the river system. Public and First Nations consultation was an important component of the water management plan. The plan also included baseline and effectiveness monitoring programs.
