NOx Reduction at Somerset GS, New York State

Recently introduced regulations require coal-burning generating stations to limit NOx emissions during the summer ozone reduction season. Hatch Energy, in association with Babcock & Wilcox, has provided balance-of-plant engineering services for a number of selective catalyst reduction reactor installations.

An SCR is a large and complex unit which, with its associated flue work and piping, can weigh as much as 2000 tons. Interface with existing buildings and equipment is often a challenge.

At Somerset GS, which is located in Niagara County, NY, Hatch Energy responsibilities included: site development; structural and foundation design; supply of ammonia, steam, water and compressed air; electrical equipment, controls and instrumentation; and extensive piping systems.
