Kincaid Selective Catalytic Reduction Installation, Illinois
Hatch Energy acted as supplier's engineer for Babcock & Wilcox during the installation of selective catalytic reduction reactors on two 575-MW coal-fired units at the Kincaid powerplant. Services included civil works, structural design, ammonia loading and storage, steam supply, architectural design and piping systems.
The two SCR units were added in response to new regulations requiring a reduction of NOx emissions from coal-burning plants. An ammonia system, in the presence of a catalyst, breaks down nitrogen oxide to form elemental nitrogen and water.
The weight of catalyst, reactor and associated fluework is over 2000 tons. Design of the supporting structure was complicated by the need to interface with existing equipment.
