The Weyburn oilfield, one of the largest medium-sour crude oil reservoirs in Canada, contains approximately 1.4 billion barrels of original oil in place. Located in southeastern Saskatchewan, the field has been on waterflood since 1964 and has been on CO2 miscible flood since 2000. Waterflood injection is used to increase reservoir pressure, while pushing oil to producing wells to improve recovery. A miscible flood is an enhanced oil recovery technique where a fluid (CO2) is injected into the reservoir to expand and sweep the oil to the producing wells, increasing recovery rates beyond waterflooding. |
On June 26, 1997, EnCana and its partners in the Weyburn Unit announced the signing of a carbon dioxide supply agreement with Dakota Gasification Company for the CO2 miscible flood. Given the phased nature of such a complex project, Hatch Energy was selected to carry out a number of tasks related to unit operation design, construction support and engineering services.
