Restart of Units 3 and 4 at Bruce A Nuclear Power Station, Ontario
When it was originally built, the Bruce nuclear generating facility consisted of two four-unit generating stations. Bruce A was later decommissioned, largely for economic reasons. Early in 2001 the new owner, Bruce Power, began the process of restarting two of the units.
The job has been entrusted to the long-standing partnership of Acres and Sargent & Lundy, who formed a joint venture with E.S. Fox to bring the two units back on line. The resulting ASLF joint venture draws on the members' long experience of power generation engineering, procurement and construction in Ontario and North America. Specific tasks at Bruce A include upgrading of backup power systems for operation during emergencies; improvements in vault ventilation; modifications to the reactor coolant system; replacement of the fire protection system; and upgrading of the feed water system.
Both units are now in production with a joint output of 1500 MW.
