Rehabilitation and Upgrade of Bishop's Falls GS, Newfoundland
In 1983 an earth dam at the 14-MW Bishop's Falls GS on the Exploits River was severely damaged by a flood. The top 17 m of the dam were washed away, and the generator hall, tailrace and downstream channels were filled with sand and gravel.
Hatch Energy returned the station to service in a period of just 11 months. A new spillway was designed and constructed, the river above the dam was stabilized, the new dam connected to existing structures, powerhouse equipment was cleaned, rebuilt or replaced, and two substations were replaced.
Since that time Hatch Energy has carried out a study of options for the future development of the site to guide the owner in planning decisions.
