Thornbury Dam and Fishway, Ontario
On behalf of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Hatch Energy provided engineering, contract and management services for the rehabilitation of a dam on the Beaver River, in the town of Thornbury. A number of issues had to be addressed, among them erosion, seepage, poor concrete condition, difficulties in handling the conventional stop-log installation during high water conditions, and the need to replace the existing fishlock by a channel which would allow the unimpeded passage of all species of sport fish.
Thornbury is in the Blue Mountain tourist area, where the Beaver Valley is a popular destination for anglers. Healthy runs of splake, speckled and rainbow trout are important to the regional economy. Because of the absolute necessity of accommodating the spring run the dam rehabilitation project was carried out on a fast-track basis, beginning in January 2003. Despite severe cold and heavy snowfalls the project was completed on schedule.

Work designed by Hatch Energy and carried out under Hatch Energy project management included a new concrete stilling basin, upgrading of the concrete structure, and replacement of the stop logs by remote controlled Obermeyer gates. Shortly after the removal of the cofferdam and fine tuning of the flow through the fishway the first run of the season jumped and swam their way through the new channel and made their way upstream.
