Shikwamkwa Replacement Dam

Hatch Energy designed, and with the project team, constructed in 2005 the Shikwamkwa Replacement Dam on a fast-track schedule to replace an ageing dam in distress. It was built on a complex, pervious, overburden foundation, sealed using a 65-m-deep plastic concrete cutoff wall – the world’s deepest using end-form techniques and the deepest of its kind in Canada. The dam is the largest built in Ontario in the last two decades.

The project incorporated a number of innovations, including the use of one of the first automated turbidity monitors, a 3-D seepage model, a unique side-scan sonar system and a till enrichment methodology.
