Godaleich GS, Upper Salmon, Newfoundland, Canada
This new single-unit generating station is located in a wilderness area in Southern Newfoundland. It is remotely controlled from the Bay d'Espoir complex, downstream.
The work involved the design and construction of a dam and spillway on the North Salmon River, and a dam on the West Salmon river. The reservoir is in two parts, divided by a height of land: two diversion channels were excavated to connect them. A 3.6-km long power canal extends from the West Salmon dam to the intake structure, which has one vertical-lift head gate with wire rope hoists. The penstock is 463-m long and 7 m in diameter. In addition, a 700-m long downstream channel was excavated to maintain water levels in Godaleich Pond.
Environmental protection was an important issue; measures were taken to control access, protect habitat, and allow passage to migrating caribou.
