Hydroelectric Power Generation

From the very beginning our core business has been associated with the world's most important renewable energy source, hydroelectric power. Harry Acres, our founder, made his reputation as an engineer on Canada's Niagara River; today the firm has carried that expertise to sites large and small in every corner of the world.

Behind us lie major projects which have changed the course of nations: dams higher than 250 m; powerhouses rated at more than 10,000 MW; 50,000 MW of power installed or enhanced. Looking around us now we see that the importance of water power has, if anything, increased. A few mega-projects remain to be completed, but the most pressing task is now to coax more power from existing resources.

Today, Hatch Energy is involved in the development of small hydro plants for the private and public sectors; we renovate aging facilities to extend their life and increase output; we develop pumped storage and compressed air storage systems to help operators better meet the needs of the market place; and we are frequently consulted on the economic and engineering aspects of alternative energy sources--wind power, for example, cogeneration, and biomass.

Many of our larger developments bring more than electricity to the communities they serve: they are also a source of irrigation, transportation and recreation. Among our most successful developments is a suite of computer-based Decision Support Systems which enable the largest water resource networks to optimize their operations, to better serve all users. These products and services are supplied through an associated company, Synexus Global.
