Roving Energy Manager

Hatch Energy identified a number of low cost energy savings opportunities at the Columbia Forest Products plant in Hearst Ontario. Natural gas savings were realized by drawing boiler combustion air from the boiler-house ceiling and through improving burner efficiency. The implemented savings from boiler efficiency improvements alone totaled $80,000 per year.

Additional potential savings of $283,000 per year were identified. These opportunities include heat recovery from baghouse exhaust air, bringing in cool outside air to supply dust collection exhaust fans, insulation of thawing ponds, installation of variable speed drives and replacing compressed air with blown air in selected applications.

Funding was provided by Ontario Power Authority and Ontario Forest Industries Association.

$80,000/year in natural gas savings were realized by modifying the air intake on this steam boiler to improve burner efficiency.
