Award-winning Decision Support System for PacifiCorp

PacifiCorp operates two power networks which supply California, Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, Idaho and Utah. Approximately 1600 MW of the total 8000 MW capacity is derived from hydropower. With the deregulation of North American energy markets, PacifiCorp recognized the need for swift and precise production planning in order to maximize opportunities and minimize risks.
In mid-2001 Synexus Global began adapting its proprietary Vista Decision Support System to PacifiCorp’s needs, and integrating the software with the company's portfolio management system. The objective was to enable managers and operating staff located in nine states to exchange information efficiently and work together to analyze impacts, resolve issues and perform monitoring and control tasks. Among the bigger challenges was the gathering together of historical stream-flow data from four major river systems. Consulting services from Synexus Global evaluated available records and developed ways to eliminate discontinuities.

With the implementation of the customized Vista DSS system, company
resource and business managers are able to share detailed operations data on a regular basis. Production is quantified over two time frames: a 3-year long view, and a 2-week short view.

The impact of the new system is so positive that the Vista Implementation Team was recognized by the highest honor granted to employees – the PacifiCorp Spirit of Excellence Award for 2001-2002.
