Computer Environment Supports 65,000 MW System

ONS, operator of the Brazilian Power System, contracted with Synexus Global to develop an integrated forecasting, planning, scheduling and dispatch system for a complex generating environment. Over 90 per cent of power is generated from hydro resources, with several very large reservoirs and numerous smaller reservoirs and run-of-river plants, in a number of river basins. More than forty rivers and one hundred power plants make up the 65,000 MW system.

The main objective was to optimize generation to meet demand in the most reliable and economical manner. One complication was that over a period of years Brazil's electrical research institute had developed a suite of mathematical models within the system, using different data formats and conventions.

Synexus Global used SimSys technology to link the various ONS specialists with the elements of the system and the 13 mathematical models. SimSys was designed to enable the many groups of users to access the system both simultaneously and independently, and to share results.

The end result is a user-friendly working environment that facilitates hydrological studies, load forecasting, and mid and short-term planning activities. Production schedules for generating companies can be developed in the light of market demand and thermal and hydro generating capabilities.
